5 min readUpdated August 2025

Keyword Research is ClearSERP's most powerful feature for discovering new keyword opportunities. Generate thousands of related keywords from a single seed term, with advanced filtering options to find exactly what you're looking for.

What is Keyword Research?

Research Mode Overview

Keyword Research finds related keywords based on your seed term, generating thousands of suggestions to help you discover new opportunities. Unlike full analysis, this mode gives you basic keyword data to help you identify opportunities before investing credits in comprehensive SERP analysis.

What You Get

  • • Keyword suggestions and variations
  • • Search volume data
  • • Cost-per-click (CPC) estimates
  • • Keyword difficulty scores
  • • Search intent classification

What You Don't Get

  • • SERP weakness detection
  • • Domain scores or competitive analysis
  • • Individual SERP result data
  • • KeywordScore calculation
  • • Page speed or content analysis

Seed Keyword Options

Wildcard Support

Use asterisks (*) as wildcards to discover keyword variations. Perfect for finding different ways people search for your topic.

Examples:

  • best * for dogs → "best food for dogs", "best toys for dogs", etc.
  • how to * weight → "how to lose weight", "how to gain weight", etc.
  • * marketing tools → "email marketing tools", "social marketing tools", etc.
Tip: Start with broad seed keywords to maximize discovery potential. You can always filter results afterward to find specific keyword types.

Result Limits and Credit Costs

Available Result Limits

100
results
1 Credit
1,000
results
10 Credits
10,000

100 Credits

Credit Refunds: If fewer results are found than your limit, you'll automatically receive a proportional credit refund. For example, if you select 1,000 results but only 500 are found, you'll be charged 5 credits instead of 10.

Advanced Settings

Sorting Options

Choose how your keyword results are ordered to prioritize what matters most for your strategy.

Available Sort Options:

  • Search Volume: High to low (default) or low to high
  • Keyword Difficulty: Easy to hard or hard to easy
  • Cost Per Click: High to low or low to high
  • Alphabetical: A-Z or Z-A

Recommended Strategies:

  • High Volume: For traffic potential discovery
  • Low Difficulty: For quick ranking opportunities
  • High CPC: For commercial value keywords

Location & Language Targeting

Language Selection

Choose the language for keyword suggestions. This affects the keyword discovery process and ensures culturally relevant keyword variations.

Location Targeting

Select the target country for search volume and CPC data. Different countries may show different search patterns and commercial values for the same keywords.

Advanced Filtering System

Filter Categories

Apply up to 8 different filters to narrow down your keyword results and find exactly what you're looking for.

Content Filters

Questions Only

Filter to show only question-based keywords (who, what, when, where, why, how, do, does, can, will, etc.)

Use case: Perfect for content marketing and FAQ creation strategies.

Contains Filters

Include keywords that contain specific terms with "ANY" or "ALL" logic.

  • ANY: Contains at least one of the specified terms
  • ALL: Contains all of the specified terms
  • • Use quotes for exact word matching (e.g., "dog" won't match "dogs")

Doesn't Contain Filters

Exclude keywords that contain specific terms with "ANY" or "ALL" logic.

Tip: Use this to filter out competitor brand names or irrelevant terms.

Metric-Based Filters

Search Volume Range

Filter by monthly search volume to find keywords with your desired traffic potential.

Cost Per Click Range

Filter by estimated CPC to identify high-value commercial keywords.

Keyword Difficulty Range

Filter by difficulty score (0-100) to find keywords matching your competitive capability.

Search Intent Filters

Intent Types:

  • Informational: Looking for information
  • Navigational: Finding specific sites
  • Commercial: Researching before buying
  • Transactional: Ready to purchase

Strategy Applications:

  • Blog content: Informational keywords
  • Product pages: Commercial + Transactional
  • Brand awareness: Navigational keywords

  • • Don't forget to save valuable keyword lists before starting new research
  • • Don't use too many filters initially - you might miss opportunities
